Muness Castle is situated in Muness (near Uyeasound), in the south of the island and is owned and maintained by Historic Scotland.

It is reported that French raiders stormed and burned the castle in 1627 and although it was subsequently repaired, the castle was uninhabited by the late 1600s.
Since then, Muness Castle was rented out in 1713 to the Dutch East India Company and it was used as a storage facility for salvaged cargo from a nearby wreck. The castle is understood to have been uninhabited from 1750 to the present day.
