The Centenary Uyeasound Up Helly Aa

As many of you will know, the very first Uyeasound Up Helly Aa was held in 1911 – exactly 100 years ago – so this year Fred Johnson had the honour of being the jarl for the centenary. The jarl’s squad made their usual visits around the island during the day, including Nordalea Care Centre, Baltasound Junior High School (where pupils performed their own acts, as mentioned elsewhere) and Uyeasound Primary School.

In the evening, it was breezy but dry (and a lot better than it was over the following 72 hours!) so the procession around Uyeasound was a success – although with 171 guisers there weren’t many people left to be spectators.
