Our Nordabrake self-catering houses are ideal for parties of all shapes and sizes, from couples to families to larger parties wanting to rent several houses together: for people wanting to do their own thing while taking advantage of our facilities as and when it suits.

You can cater entirely for yourself/ves in a fully-fitted kitchen, or alternatively you can relax while enjoying delicious meals in our restaurant.

Houses are generally let on a weekly basis with minimum stay of 2 nights. The houses sleep 5 adults.

Nordabrake is situated on the north side of Saxa Vord and consists of 16 warm and comfortable houses set in a circle around a central lawn with children’s play area. All residents have access to our restaurant which serves lunches and evening meals, please check for opening times, as these vary throughout the year. Each of the 16 Nordabrake houses has been awarded 3 stars under VisitScotland’s Quality Assurance Grading Scheme.

Facilities:

All houses are equipped with a wide range of useful appliances to make your stay as enjoyable and carefree as possible.

Bedrooms – 1 double, 1 twin and 1 single. Bedrooms are bright and airy with ample storage space. Linen is provided and cots by arrangement.

Sitting Rooms – Sitting rooms are large and equipped with TVs, DVD, CD players and board games.

Dining Rooms – A comfortable dining table is in the conservatory – light and bright during the day, very atmospheric at night.

Kitchen – Kitchens are well equipped with electric cookers, microwaves, fridge-freezers etc.

Bathrooms – All have baths, showers and electric shaver points. Towels are provided.

Heating – All houses are heated throughout by electricity, included in the price.

Laundry Facilities – Laundry facilities include washing machines, indoor clothes drying and ironing boards and irons.

Garages – All houses have private garages.

No-Smoking – Note that all houses are strictly non-smoking.

Shackleton Lodge

Shackleton Lodge is newly refurbished hostel accommodation. The lodge has 9 single rooms, 3 of which have guest beds available, and therefore it can accommodate up to 12 people. This is ideal accommodation for activity groups of school groups that want to make the most of what Unst has to offer.

Facilities include:

  • 9 single rooms (3 with guest beds as shown below)
  • 3 shared bathrooms
  • Lounge with TV
  • Well-equipped kitchen area
  • ‘Stored away’ table and chairs for group eating
  • Additional fridge/freezer and food storage capacity

Exclusive use ranges from £130 to £199 per night.

Shackleton Lodge is available for a minimum of 2 nights all year round.

We will to accept smaller groups (minimum of 4 people) depending on availability.

Saxa Vord’s Sergeants’ Mess Hostel

Saxa Vord’s Sergeants’ Mess Hostel is much more than a hostel – indeed it is more akin to a university hall of residence in style.

Designed with lovers of the great outdoors in mind, it is warm and comfortable and has everything that you need to relax after a day’s exploration, including a bar selling delicious bar meals just down the corridor.  The full-board price can be obtained on request.

The main hostel is situated in the former Sergeants’ Mess and has large, bright rooms, with double, twin and single rooms available.

Parties of ornithologists, archaeologists, geologists and general travellers are very welcome and block bookings of one or both hostels are encouraged, subject to availability. We also have a variety of meeting and lecture rooms which can be put at your disposal should you need them.

Facilities

Bedrooms – There are 26 bedrooms, most having single beds and wash basins though some have twin or double beds. There is ample storage space and bed linen is provided, though not towels, which may be hired.

Kitchen – There is a kitchen with cooker, refrigerator and microwave. You are also very welcome to eat in our restaurant and, of course, to enjoy bar meals in the bar.

Laundry – Service Washes are available.

Parking – There is ample parking outside the Hostel.

No-Smoking – Smoking is not permitted in any of the buildings.

Saxa Vord’s Restaurant and Lounge Bar

The restaurant and bar is open Thursday to Saturday for evening meals and Sunday lunch on a booking basic only. For 2015 we will be open every day from the 22th of May until the start of September. Please contact us on 01957 711711 / 370 for opening times and bookings.

Saxa Vord and Unst Regeneration Growers Enterprise (URGE) were winners in the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards 2011 – ‘Best Supplier Partnership’ category. We have a close working relationship with a number of local suppliers (Shetland Distillery Company, Sonny Priest’s ‘Valhalla Brewery’, Bobby’s Bus Shelter Fudge and Foords Chocolates), but our partnership with Unst Market Gardens, the UK’s most northerly market garden is key to the high quality meals that are served in our seasonal restaurant. Delicious and homely bar meals are the order of the day.  (Please note menus will change throughout the season)

Starters include: Homemade soups and crusty bread, seared duck with a cherry compote made with Shetland Reel Gin….. Prices range from £4.50 to £6.95.

Main Courses include: Saxa Vord’s Fish and Chips in Valhalla Beer Batter; Highland chicken breast stuffed with haggis, Shetland Lamb Shank that melts in the mouth and Sirloin steaks… We also cater for vegetarians and all dietary needs….. Prices range from £9.50 to £18.50.

Desserts include: homemade warm chocolate brownies, Banoffee Tartlet and red wine poached pears with cinnamon….. Prices range from £5.50

Saxa Vord is home to The Shetland Distillery Company the most northerly distillery in the UK where the Shetland Reel Gin is made with apple mint grown on Unst. The Valhalla Brewery, is next door where they make the excellent Auld Rock, Island Bere, White Wife, Old Scatness, Sjolmet Stout and Simmer Dim beers.  The Saxa Vord team will make you very welcome and will be delighted to serve you a Valhalla beer or a G&T – or any of the other beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks on offer.
