Hagdale Horse Mill was listed as an official Historic Scotland Building in 1988. It is the only horse mill on Unst, and is a place where horses were yoked and used to grind chromite ore which was quarried locally.

The mill was built in 1917 and in it’s two halves, bound by a wide iron rim sitting inside the mill, it functioned for a number of years before it’s closure in 1921. The mill, now roofless, is a single storey, circular horse-mill with a drystone rubble wall.

You’ll find the mill located in Baltasound, behind Hagdale. It is not accessible by car, and a small walk down the rubbly path
