A Premier League clash against league leaders Whalsay.
Saturday, 18th August 2007 - Premier League
| Unst | 0 - 5 | Whalsay |
| (HT 0-4) |
Table toppers Whalsay travelled with a strong squad to meet an Unst squad which was also almost at full strength. Both teams settled quickly but both defences seemed to be coping well early on. John Montgomerie lobbed the keeper but the ball narrowly went past the post before good play from Unst led to Neil Laurenson hitting the inside of the post only for the ball to run along the goal line leaving the game goaless.
Whalsay began to get the edge and were looking dangerous at set plays when Richard Arthur attacked the ball well at the back post to open the scoring. Within minutes Whalsay struck again when Montgomerie was left in too much space at the edge of the box where he smashed the ball into the far corner.
Unst’s midfield trio of Thomson, Laurenson and Henderson were competing well and Grant Thomson tipped a terrific strike from Erik Thompson over the bar. Unst threatened again at a corner but again the Whalsay keeper did enough to keep a clean sheet. Gary Jamieson then struck a killing blow just before half time to kill the game although the Unst fans were convinced it was off-side.
In the second half Whalsay controlled the game and put the Unst defence under more pressure. With Unst re-shuffling due to injuries the away side created chances with some good passing football but poor finishing cost them until Stuart Shearer finally headed home at the back post. Ian Simpson slotted home on his left foot to complete the scoring.
Whalsay will have been happy with the points along with an assured performance from a talented young side. Credit should go to Unst also for playing some slick football in the first half and battling well when under pressure late on.
