We are fortunate to have a very committed community in Unst, who are keen to be involved in our school life.
With the help of Linda Thomson at Active Schools, in 2013-14 we began an inter-generational project with Day Care participants from Nordalea Care Centre. This project was based around exercise and chair type activities.
In 2015-16, we started a new inter-generational project, with Dr Daniel Rhodes, archaeologist from the National Trust for Scotland. To involve members of the community as guides to show us different areas of Unst. We will be looking at recording sounds at each of the areas we visit and then editing out recent human activity sounds, for our recordings of the distant past in Unst. To be involved please contact emily.tulloch@shetland.gov.uk
During 2016-2017, we have already been forging and further developing our inter-generational skills working with local experts, staff at the Unst Heritage Trust and the University of St Andrews learning the fine art of basket weaving and how to create, record and share artefacts using digital technology – truly a fine combination of the old and the new; learning about our the rich and varied past as well as looking to the future.
