V.E. Day

Upper Primary’s VE Day Celebration!

After learning all about World War II last term, our Upper Primary pupils took on the challenge of planning and organising their very own VE Day party – and what an amazing job they did! The bairns researched decorations and worked out costs, coloured and crafted their own Union Jack flags using straws, and even created their own wartime music playlist. They used real-life maths skills to plan out party food – collecting data to find out who wanted ham, cheese or ham and cheese sandwiches, calculating how many slices of bread and ham they would need along with how many slices they would need to cut a block of cheese into.

Finally they worked out the total cost per person as an extra challenge. They used fractions to figure out how many sandwiches to make if each one was cut into 4 triangles. For games, they organised a fun version of 4 corners with Allied and Axis flags as well as their leaders, capture the flag with Great Britain and Germany, and pin the flag on the map to test their geography knowledge. Today, they decorated the classroom with balloons, bunting, flags and streamers, made their sandwiches and made sure there was enough fruit and food for everyone. When asked by a member of staff why they were having this party, they explained all about VE Day and why it is celebrated.

It has been great to see how much the bairns have learned – using their maths skills in real-lif situations and applying their knowledge to create such a lovely party. Well done to all of Upper Primary!
